Oh what a meal!

  • by

I was disappointed that Emanuel was so busy, because when I spoke to him when we arrived in Costa Rica, he told me that the day we would be leaving (8/15) was the Costa Rican Mother’s Day, and maybe we could plan something special for Karen. Since he was busy he was unavailable, however Dylan managed to find some heart confetti that he stashed. He planned on showering Karen with it in bed the following morning. For some reason, Mother’s Day caused the hotel’s restaurant to be closed, so we were going to have to venture out into Alajuela to find our meal. This caused a little bit of anxiety based on what happened last time we ventured into Alajuela (remember the Wal-Mart adventure?), and because the sun would set while we ate meaning I’d have to drive in the dark. I however was not to be dissuaded.

IMG_1483I decided that we would stay on the road the the hotel was on so it would be easy enough to find again. We passed a few small food establishments, then turned around and returned to one we had decided upon. We walked into the place and looked at the menu. I order a taco plate, then a second, because tacos are pretty small, right? The boys each got a hamburgeusa and papas, and Karen ordered fried chicken platter. the man working there spoke no english, so our spanish was put to the test, but we got through the ordering, and felt pretty good. We should have had some suspicion when he told us that Karen’s platter was served with a 1 liter bottle of soda… we didn’t. It took about 20 minutes for the food to be prepared, so we watched the History channel in spanish while we waited, and the boys plugged their ears from the loud motorcycles that continually passed by on the street in front.

First brought was my taco, which was actually a rolled taco which was more comparable in size to a fried burrito. It was HUGE! and the plate came with fries and some sort of slaw… and I had order two of these plates! The boys burgers arrived, an then Karen’s chicken, which appeared to be every part of one whole chicken, of and then a massive plate of slaw for Karen’s platter, and then the plate of fries… holy Schmoly! Look at all of this food:

We laughed… seriously, what else are you going to do, when you have four people sitting around a table with enough food to feed six people, and then enough food to feed five more is placed in front of you? One interesting thing about this meal was that the fries, the slaw, and my tacos came covered in ketchup. mustard, and mayo. It was actually not bad, and I was able to eat everything that had that on it.

After we finished, we easily found our way back to the hotel, we pawned off our leftovers on the hotel staff, and retired for the evening.
