Travel day, oy vey!

Footbridge across canal - København

–>  Sunny – high temp 90ºF –> Mostly cloudy – high temp 52ºF

What can be said about a travel day that contains a 10 hour flight other than:

  1. It’s over
  2. We survived

We all got some sleep… that is the benefit of a red eye. However plane seat sleep is pretty sucky sleep.  It was also odd that we had lost nine hours of our day, it was as if we had time traveled into the future; at least that’s what I told the boy.

After getting our passport stamped, we stepped outside to experience our first bit of Danish weather. We could see through the airport windows it was clearly great outside, and we had an expectation that it would be chilly, and our expectations were met. Outside the airport the wind blew lightly and it was a cold wind.

We grabbed a taxi and headed to the AirBnB apartment we were staying in. The drive was pretty short, no more than 20 minutes, and when we arrived we met Lis, the woman whose apartment me were staying in.

She answered all of our questions about the area and getting around the city. After she left us, the drama started. I went into this trip with a bit of anxiety that the times that Karen and I were  not taking the boys to places, that they would both have their face buried in their device. As soon as Lis left, Aidan requested the Wi-Fi password. Although I was a bit triggered, my response was very measured and I simply shared my concern that  they wouldn’t miss much of the trip with their face is buried in their devices.  For this, I received quite the outburst from Aidan. And as I tried to explain calmly what my concerns were and that they were not directed at him as an attack, he continued to spin and spin and spin. At that point it was clear his body was lacking sleep, and food at the very least. So  after many more moments trying to disengage from him, we eventually walked over the foot bridge across the canal to the shopping center/mall where we had, what else, pizza and McDonald’s for dinner.

With food onboard everybody’s body, things took a turn for the better and we decided to explore the mall where we found a small area where the boys could ride a Segway.  And always wanted to ride a Segway, so this was a pretty cool experience to let them have.

After leaving the mall, we walked back across the footbridge and stopped at Netto, the corner market, on our way back to the apartment

When got back the apartment, the boys hopped on their devices and Karen got the beds ready. I sat and enjoyed a Carlsburg Stout. When I felt the tug of sleepiness, I retired from our first evening on a different continent as a family. I’m not sure when the rest of the family went to bed…
